Essential Accessories vs. Optional Upgrades
Not every accessory is necessary for every patient. However, some are so closely linked to therapy effectiveness that most users end up needing them within the first few months.

Heated Tubing (Smart Tubing)
Standard CPAP tubing can cause rainout — condensation that builds up inside the hose and causes water to drip into the mask. Heated tubing maintains a consistent temperature along the length of the hose. This eliminates rainout and improves overall comfort, particularly in cooler bedrooms. Chin Straps
A chin strap wraps around the chin and the back of the head to keep the mouth closed during sleep. It is primarily used by patients on nasal-only masks who breathe through their mouth during the night. Mouth breathing while wearing a nasal mask breaks the seal and allows pressurized air to escape, reducing therapy effectiveness.
Additionally, chin straps can reduce snoring associated with open-mouth breathing. They are a simple, low-cost solution before considering a switch to a full face mask.
CPAP Pillows
Standard pillows can press against your mask during sleep, causing leaks and discomfort. CPAP pillows are designed with cutouts or contoured recesses that accommodate the mask and tubing. They allow side sleepers in particular to position their head without pushing the mask off-centre.
If you consistently wake up with your mask displaced or with red marks from mask pressure, a CPAP pillow is worth considering. It is a low-cost accessory that can meaningfully improve your seal and comfort through the night.
Filters
Your CPAP machine draws room air in through a filter before pressurizing it. Standard foam filters are washable and should be rinsed weekly and replaced monthly. Fine particle filters, where available, are disposable and should be replaced every two weeks. A clogged or overdue filter reduces airflow and forces your machine to work harder, potentially shortening its lifespan.
